GBS and Other Acute Dysimmune Neuropathies

RO 2009

Our yearbook for 2009 has now been published. It contains full reports of the presentations made at our 2009 Conference, an article on stress and an article on vaccinations that expands upon our current advice. The yearbook also contains a very comprehensive article on GBS reprinted with permission from The Lancet.

Reaching Out 2009 has been distributed to the members and the friends of the GBSSG and will be given free to all those who register for support or subscribe. It is also available for sale at £3 per copy plus a delivery charge.

Guillain-Barré syndrome is the most common form of acute dysimmune neuropathy. There is more than one type of GBS. The most common type in Europe and North America is a demyelinating condition called acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP).

In some areas of the world, the most common form of GBS is caused by acute motor axonal neuropathy (AMAN). Acute motor/sensory axonal neuropathy (AMSAN) is also reported. A well-documented variant of GBS is the Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS). There are other much rarer variants.

Confused by the jargon?

Whatever the variant is that interests you, we recommend that you begin with our guide on Guillain-Barré syndrome and then read the other guides and information as appropriate.

Printed Guides

Our printed guides are available by post from our office and will be sent free to addresses in the UK and Ireland. However, they are also available on line in PDF format and can be downloaded, viewed and printed using free Adobe Reader software. The files are A4 in size and are scaled for A4 paper. If you wish to print them on another size of paper (eg letter), select 'Fit to paper' before printing. The pages may print as an A5 booklet if your printer/software supports this feature though the text may be quite small.

HTML versions of these guides are also available for viewing though they have not been optimised for printing. If you wish to print the guides, we recommend the PDF format.

If you find these guides useful and would like to help us to continue providing information to others, there are several ways you can help us. You can:
